MPH Graduate Assistantship
Baylor University’s Master of Public Health program believes in getting students into practice as soon as possible. Graduate assistantships—known as Graduate Student Employee (GSE) positions—are available to all full-time, on campus Baylor MPH students, beginning their first semester in the program. Spots are limited, so we encourage applicants to apply early for the program.
Students in full-time GSE positions work 20 hours per week and are awarded a monthly stipend for the duration of the hire. Most GSE positions are awarded for a period of 1-2 years, with second-year renewal dependent on a favorable review of service in the first year.
“My MPH assistantship at Baylor University has been transformative. This opportunity offered me hands-on public health experience while sharpening my data analysis and program planning skills. I highly recommend this as an invaluable steppingstone that bridges classroom learning with real-world impact.” —Rebecca Anumel-Ackah, MPH in Epidemiology
Types of GSE Positions
The number and types of GSE positions available through Baylor’s MPH program vary from year to year, and applications are competitive. Types of positions include:
Graduate Instructor
Graduate Instructors teach as members of the PUBH 1145 Health and Human Behavior teaching team. This course is a required personal wellness course in many Baylor undergraduate degree programs that meets for 50 minutes twice per week.
"One of the things I love most about my assistantship as a Graduate Instructor is the opportunity to make learning enjoyable while strengthening professional skills such as communication, teaching, leadership, and organization. I truly enjoy sharing valuable health information with my students, but my favorite thing is learning about my students’ lifestyles and interests through discussions and tailoring the material and activities to their needs. This program has been an incredible experience for both professional and personal growth." —Alexandria Woody, MPH in Community Health Science
Graduate Researcher
Graduate Researchers assist individual research faculty members (or research teams) with their research efforts, engaging in tasks such as article searches/literature reviews; data collection, management, and analysis; proposal development; manuscript and/or grant report development; and the development and delivery of conference posters and oral presentations.
"My experience as a research assistant at the BEHR Lab with Dr. Brooks has been incredibly rewarding. The lab fosters a diverse and synergistic environment where collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Each member of the Brooks Lab is highly communicative, openly sharing ideas, experiences, and perspectives, which creates a supportive and enriching space for learning and growth. I have thoroughly enjoyed gaining new skills and discovering innovative ways to engage with the environment. Being part of such a dynamic team has deepened my passion for environmental health and research." —Charlotte Nwagwu, MPH in Environmental Health Science
Graduate Practitioner
Graduate Practitioners work with partnering non-academic programs on the Baylor campus, such as Campus Recreation or Student Health and Wellness, as well as the McLennan County Public Health District. In these roles, Graduate Practitioners help implement programing, assist with administrative tasks, and support organizational goals.
