Assistantship
Assistantships offered to students in our Baylor on-campus MPH Program are referred to as "Graduate Student Employment" (GSE) positions. These GSE positions are generally awarded for a period of 1-2 years, with second-year renewal dependent on a favorable review of service in the first year.
Only full-time students in the on-campus MPH Program are eligible for assistantships. All students in GSE positions must be full-time students in the on-campus version of our MPH Program. All full-time students are expected to move through the 2-year degree program in cohorts. Entry to the program begins each fall semester.
Assistantships may be full or partial. A full-time GSE position includes 20 hours per week of work for which the student is paid a stipend. GSEs may also be offered a separate academic scholarship to help with tuition costs. Click here for information about tuition costs per credit hour and student fees.
What positions are available?
The number and types of GSE positions available through the MPH program vary from year to year. Eligibility for some positions is also dependent on the student's chosen concentration (e.g., Community Health Science, Epidemiology, or Environmental Health Science) because the type of work in some positions is specific to the chosen concentration/discipline.
The support application form is usually updated each year to contain known information about positions for that year. Check the application guide and form (see links in next section) first, and then, contact the MPH program director for your specific concentration for details about actual positions available.
How do I apply?
Application for admission into our MPH program and application for a GSE position (assistantship) in the MPH program are two separate processes that should be completed by the same designated deadline (December 15th). To apply for admission as a student in our MPH program, access the SOPHAS website (search for the Baylor University Public Health Program). Follow the instructions in the next section to apply for a GSE position.
To apply for a GSE position, download the support application guide and form. A pool of GSE candidates is selected from among those who applied for both program acceptance (through SOPHAS) and for a GSE position (by following the instructions in the support guide).
Those selected for GSE position interviews will be invited to interviews that usually occur in February/early March. We usually invite these selected candidates to a 2- or 3-day interview and campus visit event in early spring (February/March). Those invited to this event are strongly encouraged to travel to the Baylor campus (Waco, Texas) and engage in person if at all possible. The Graduate Program Director will provide details to those selected.
